Work From Anywhere Series | Episode 15: Remote Work & Global Mobility

Is remote work anywhere a dream? Or can it be turned into a reality? What are the barriers to doing so and the opportunities for companies that get this right?

Welcome to the remote work from anywhere series. This is a series featuring some of the leading people around the world in remote work, global mobility and work from anywhere compliance (remote work tax, employment law, digital nomads, etc.).

Rethinking Global Mobility In A Work From Anywhere World

We are delighted to be bringing you our latest episode in the Work From Anywhere series, this time in conjunction with the team at Talent Mobility Search, to dig deeper with our guests into the future of global mobility in a work from anywhere world.

(8:30) A 2 week Work From Anywhere policy in practice…the restrictions of a highly regulated financial services sector. Requests from employees looking to spend longer times on holidays in their origin countries looked at on an individual case by case basis. Extended vacations thus far. Expected increase in requests next year when Covid restrictions end. (12:30) Companies trying to make this work. The challenges of communicating to the different stakeholders.

(15:15) Compliance the number one risk keeping global mobility heads up at night, including Permanent Establishment. No one size fits all solution. Need to tailor to each company to provide peace of mind. (17:30) The impact of WFA on the climate. The trade-offs of reducing commutes versus increased business travel. Social mobility and the diversity & inclusion impact.

(22:45) The isolation impact of WFH and risk of burnout. The challenges of training new staff. (26:40) Home office set up…where does the accountability sit when people request to work remotely? The impact of some returning to the office and those that don’t feeling even more isolated. People struggling with boundary setting, managing the work life balance. (30:30) Hubspot offering 90 days Work From Anywhere…will this become more common? The merging of Global Mobility and Business Travel. The perfect moment for Global Mobility to have a huge impact. Technology will have the biggest part to play in managing the additional admin workload.

(37:50) The stakeholders driving the implementation of Work From Anywhere…Exec leadership, HR, Finance. Work From Anywhere creating the space to allow people to start a side hustle. (41:00) If you could work anywhere in the world, where would it be? The wine regions of Central Otago, New Zealand. The ability to work from anywhere. The draw of city life!
